Longhofer Family History Since being back in the mood to do some more research, we ran across the Bickford Cemetery in Ellis County Kanas. Also some listings in the Lutheran Cemetery in Ellis County too! I have requested additional information o­n the Longhofer's buried there, this might be some help in filling in the blank lines.

Upade: Donna, who is maintaining the Luthern Data above, was nice enough to send a listing from her database. Included was some articles about Jonas Longhofer being killed. Interesting read from 1944. Click o­n the Title above to see the rest of the story.

WOMAN HELD FOLLOWING  FATAL SHOOTING Mammie Boyles of eight miles northeast of Shattuck us being held in the county jail awaiting an investigation of a fatal shooting that occurred at the Boyles home o­n Ivanhoe Creek, aboutt 4:00 p. in., Wednesday afternoon, July 5th, in which Jonas Longhofer was killed by a bullet fired from a 22-caliber bolt action rifle. Longhofer, 36 year old farmer and stockmen residing about 4 miles west of the Boyles place just over the Texas line, is alleged to have driven to the Boyles home, about 1/4 mile north of the main road. Where he first ask for a drink of water, he later entered the Boyles home and is alleged to have made improper advances toward Mrs. Boyles. Sbe requested the man to leave her alone, when he failed to heed her warning she pointed the rifle at him and in the excitement ap­parently pulled the trigger. Longhofer was shot through the neck just above the breast bone,. and died a few minutes following the fatal shooting. Jonas Longhofer is married and is survived by his wife and six children. George Boyles husband of Mammie Boyles was employed o­n a farm north of the Boyles home and was in the field plowing at the time. Longhofer is alleged to have been drinking nearly all day. A partly consumed bottle of whiskey was found in his truck following his death.

21 Jul 1944 HEARING HELD TUESDAY IN LONGHOFER KILLING Mrs. Mammie Boyles of west of Shattuck was arraigned in District Court Tuesday, o­n a charge of murder in connection with the death of Jonas Longhofer, some two weeks ago. The hearing was held o­n the application of the defendant After hearing the evidence Judge Keen bound Mrs. Boyles over for trial under bond of $3,700.00 which she made for her appearance in Court. Longhofer is alleged to have entered the Boyles home seven miles northwest of Shattuck, and to have made improper advances toward Mrs. Boyles and to have threatened her. The defendant picked up a gun and pointed it at the man. The weapon discharg ed the bullet struck Longhofofer in the neck and he died a short time later. J. W. Burrow, Gage Attorney represented the defendant. Woodrow Walton, Shattuck, was employed by relatives of the dead man to assist County Attor ney Enfield with the prosecution.
