Well summer is starting. And around the server, we have been doing a bit of spring cleaning. Mostly stopping the unbeliveable amount of spam mail.
Read More if your interested. We currently are running trend anti virus and spam filter. In addition, there was some recent sendmail issues with "Relaying" or allowing spammers to send mail via our server. This just makes me sick, but after several nights burning the midnight oil, all is right in the longhofer mail system.
There was alot of sendmail things to do, but with help available on the net, we got it done, in fact, its better than ever! We now check all incomming mail for virus, and known spammers, in addition, we are filtering some of the most common porn emails.
So hopefully, if your on our system, you will see a reduced ammount of mail you dont want!
In ADDITION we now support auto detection of valid users, which will allow you to send your mail via our server. This is known as PopImap before smtp. What does this mean?
Well if you login and pickup your mail. The server will see your address, and then allow sending of mail from that address for a predetermined ammount of time. Then expire that address.
So if you see a warning saying Relaying not allowed, just try and send/receive again, so your address will have been registered, and it should then go thru. This makes the administration much eaiser! (for me)
Let me know if you have ANY probems.
Regards,
Rod

You use squirrelmail!! I love that! (I use it at work, so I'm familiar with it's setup.) Very cool, and easier than IMP or Horde to admin (or troubleshoot). I'm sorry that you have to endure sendmail, though. Once I saw it was written by aliens, and the .cf files were too, I decided to never run it again. (Well, that and old versions have holes the Red Army could have drove through.) I usually use Postfix, myself, and it's really easy to block relaying, use RBLs (I use 3), and setup mailman (a mailing list program). Anyhoo, I'll be around!

That makes me think: which IMAP server are you using (uw or cyrus)? And why? I eventually chose Cyrus because it had ACL support, and I didn't have to give everyone local accounts (ie. shell accounts). Cyrus uses sasl, so it doesn't care if I have a shell account (nice for security).
